Expertise
In my role as an Occupational Therapist I have had over 25 years experience in assessing the needs of disabled people and finding ways to meet those needs in a person centred way. This has been to enable them to live independently and with dignity in their own homes. I have mostly worked with people with physical disabilities but also people with learning difficulties, mental health problems, and dementia. This has mainly been with older people but has included people of all ages. A very important aspect of the role of an OT is using activities to promote wellbeing and having the qualities of empathy and respect for the individuality of the person you are working for.
Experience
I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1993 and since that time I have worked for various local borough councils in various parts of the country. My work has been mostly with people with physical disabilities but also people with learning difficulties, mental health issues, dementia. I have also worked for four years as a Senior Occupational Therapist in a Home Treatment Team in London which involved working with people with serious mental health problems to enable them to remain living independently at home.
Background
I obtained a BSc honours degree in Modular Studies (majored in psychology) and then a post graduate Diploma in Occupational Therapy from The London Hospital Medical College in 1993. I have been working as an Occupational Therapist fairly continuously since then in both a permanent and a locum capacity. I have mostly worked in adult social care for various local borough councils. I have also worked for over four years employed by the health service.
